Blue Hawaii ( Not Hawaiian )

The Origins of the Blue Hawaii Cocktail

The Blue Hawaii cocktail was born in 1957 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki, thanks to legendary bartender Harry Yee.

When a sales rep asked him to create a drink using Blue Curaçao — a vibrant liqueur made from the dried peels of the laraha citrus fruit — Yee responded with a tropical masterpiece.

The drink quickly became iconic, thanks to its electric blue hue, crushed ice, and smooth balance of spirits and pineapple juice.

Today, the Blue Hawaii is a staple in tiki bars and beachside resorts around the world — a timeless reminder of mid-century island glamor.

Here’s how you can do it yourselff

Crushed Ice Makes the Magic

For the full tropical experience, always serve your Blue Hawaii over crushed ice.

It chills the drink quickly and gives it that vacation-worthy slushy texture.

If you don’t have a machine, wrap ice in a clean towel and give it a few good whacks with a rolling pin — instant crushed ice, island-style.
