Blue Train Cocktail: A Brilliant Pre-Blue Curaçao Classic with Gin & Citrus

Ever heard of a cocktail that predates one of its own ingredients?

Meet the Blue Train: a vibrant, citrusy gin drink with a striking blue hue. This one’s got history, color, and just enough mystery to keep you sipping.

" Blue Train "

History of this cocktail

The Blue Train cocktail first appeared in the Old Mr. Boston DeLuxe Official Bartender’s Guide back in 1935. Strangely enough, one of its most visually iconic ingredients (Blue Curaçao) wasn’t even around at the time. Talk about being ahead of its time.

Originally made with gin, lemon juice, and triple sec, this cocktail eventually adopted Blue Curaçao to create the electric color it’s now known for. Despite its relatively simple build, the Blue Train packs visual flair and a crisp, citrus-forward flavor that’s still refreshing nearly a century later.

It’s a rare find in today’s cocktail scene — a beautiful throwback that still feels modern.

Here is
how we did it

Why Crushed Ice Matters for the Blue Train

Crushed ice doesn’t just chill faster, it boosts texture and amplifies presentation, especially in colorful cocktails like the Blue Train.

We love how it enhances the citrusy brightness and lets that deep blue color shine through. Try it once and you’ll be hooked.

Want to make crushed ice at home? A mallet and towel works just as well as a fancy machine.
