How to Make the B-55 Shot – A Bold Absinthe Twist on a Classic Layered Shooter

Shots don’t get much bolder than the B-55. With layers of coffee liqueur, Irish cream, and fiery absinthe, this one hits hard and smooth.

If you love layered shots or want something that turns heads at your next party, you’re in the right place. Let’s build this beast.

" B-55 " or " B-52 Gunship "

What is the
history behind this cocktail ?

You’ve probably heard of the B-52 shot, a layered crowd-pleaser made with coffee liqueur, Irish cream, and Triple Sec. But the B-55 is its edgier sibling. Instead of citrusy Triple Sec, the B-55 swaps in absinthe for a punchier, more intense experience.

The origins of the B-52 are somewhat murky, with claims pointing to both Peter Fich of Alberta, Canada and Adam Honigman of New York City.

Regardless of who invented it, the B-52 inspired numerous variations with the B-55 standing out for its herbal complexity and bite.

If you’re into bold shots with depth and a touch of mystery, the B-55 deserves a place in your repertoire.

Let's do it together!

Mastering the Layered Look:

To nail the clean layers in a B-55, use the back of a bar spoon and pour slowly. Start with coffee liqueur, then gently float Irish cream, and finish with absinthe. The key is control — and a steady hand. Practice once or twice, and you’ll be layering like a pro.
